Science Fiction and Fantasy in the Classroom Anthologies
These are terrific stories and I’m incredibly proud of them. The anthologies continue to be used in schools from elementary to first year college but I’ve no hesitation recommending them to any reader. Where did they come from? In the 1990s, I started using science fiction as a tool in my workshops on scientific literacy for students and teachers and saw a need for curriculum-linked, reader-friendly stories. Trudy Rising, co-founder of the esteemed Trifolium Books, offered to publish what I had in mind. I started with No Limits and the companion anthology, Packing Fraction, both illustrated by Larry Stewart whose art won the Aurora Award. Robert J. Sawyer’s story in this anthology won the Aurora for best short fiction the same year.
The Wonder Zone was born, designed for grades 4-8. These books feature cover and interior art by Jean-Pierre Normand. In 2003, Tales from the Wonder Zone was honoured with the Golden Duck Special Award for Best Science and Technology Education given to me by Hal Clement himself at the 2003 Worldcon in Toronto. In 2007, Polaris became the first science fiction title to win the Science Writers of Canada Associations’s Award for Science & Society (Youth) in 2007.
Teachers asked for themed fantasy short stories, to use in language arts. Three Realms of Wonder anthologies followed, with covers for the first and third by Kenn Brown and Chris Wren, and the second by Heather Bruton.

New Writer?
Here’s my thing. I buy at least one story by a previously unpublished author for all of my anthologies—often more than one. My chance to give something back to our community—and how I find fabulous new writers and stories. I encourage you to contact me and ask to be on my invitation list. When I do my next anthology, I’ll send you the information on its theme and submission details. The rest, as they say, is up to you. Good luck!
